Okay, 3/16" is .1875" while 5 mm is ~.200". Bentley shows a minimum 
clearance dimension there of 4.5 mm, which would be ~.180, which is 
less than your 3/16", and would interfere.

Any chance you can make a better measurement, like to a tenth of a 
mm, or so?

My old seals measure just a bit over 5 mm, so a 5 mm setback would be 
too little, but the steel skeleton in my seals has rusted and 
expanded, making these measurements iffy.

Maybe it's time to ask Dennis to pull his spare axle beam out and 
measure the setback on both sides, just to get a better average.

Dennis, could you go ahead and make those measurements sometime, when 
it's convenient?

This is bumming me out. It shouldn't be so hard, and Bentley (and VW) 
shouldn't have gotten this wrong. My guess is that this setback 
should be 6 mm +/- 0.5 mm.
