I know that I had 2 '71 columns at one time, and I should still have
at least 1 left. I'm out of town right now, but I can be sure by

Since this is a '71, you should work to keep your existing switch
intact. What I've done with them is to reassemble them and then wrap
in electrical tape until they are a tight push fit in the
switch/cylinder housing. This will add the strength of the cyl
housing to that of the switch.
Note that the ID of the housing has a slight taper to it, so that you
should try for a matching taper to the elect tape. IIRC, even if they
seem quite tight in there, you can always push the switch back out by
removing the lock cyl first and pushing it back out from that end.
