This is making me wonder if your fan housing is loose, or has shifted 
with respect to the case. That could allow the generator to get 
closer to the crank, requiring a shorter (or wider) belt. Give your 
fan housing a shake to see if it's loose. If it is, you need to fix 
this pronto, before those 2 little screws come completely free and 
start to eat at the backside of your fan. Don't worry, when that 
happens, they'll make LOTs of noise, so this is never a stealth 
problem. Nevertheless, it's always better to fix it at a time of your 
choosing, rather than in an emergency, in someone's parking lot....

BTW, there's a special VW tool for centering the fan housing on the 
case. It fits snugly into the center holes of each one and holds them 
in alignment while the screws are tightened.
