I read in the Muir book (Bentley doesn't speak to this issue) that if one
were just servicing the heads then you should be very careful to make sure
the cylinders do not pull away from the case when removing the cylinder
head. What is the basis for this statement? Is it just that it is more a
PITA if it slips off?
It means that you'll have to use new paper gaskets at the point where the
cylinders meet and seal at the case. Be warned that some engine builders use
a shim here to level out the compression ratio, and take up the difference
in manufacturing/machining. Some also don't use a paper gasket, but rather
use silicone to prevent oil leaks.
Also, you should do 1 cylinder at a time, and use some valve lapping
compound to help seal the head end.
