I think it's mostly a PITA thing.

When Muir wrote his book, everyone used the paper gaskets, which 
would be torn, and you'd have to completely remove the cyl to replace 
it. Later, VW recommended using silicone sealant instead of the paper 
gaskets, so that would be easier.

Installing the cylinders over the pistons requires a special piston 
ring compressor, which is a bit of a pain until you get used to it. 
Don't try to get by with makeshift methods, as this may seem 
expedient, but it's likely to result in broken rings.
