Found my own solution. Bosch SR-17x / remanufactured 16300 from O'Reilly's.
This is a self supporting autostick starter that does not require the
bushing. And they are only $40 with a lifetime warranty.

Use this starter and clearance the bell housing and I will be good. Tragedy
averted.
