[T3] Speedometer/ Odometer woes

Last thing you want to try to do is remove the needle .
I don't know how skilled you are but you need to remove the knob then the
chrome ring by lifting up a few of the tabs that lock it to the housing .You
will then be able to remove the lens and trim ring which will come away ,
the unit comes out through the front . This will allow you to remove the
two screws on the back and carefully lift the unit out and be very careful
not to damage the needle or face. I lift it using the drive stub.
The part that causes this failure is this aluminum gear on the shaft that
holds the odometer numbers at the opposite end is a brass drive gear ,
sometimes this brass gear is loose on that shaft . On the 2 I have repaired
it was that aluminum gear .
You need to remove the trip number wheels first because the aluminum gear
can't be removed from the top . The trip meter number wheels have small
engagement deals so you need to remove that shaft first. . It's tricky at
best , not so much taking it apart but getting the odometer numbers to line
up to the milage you have now , you can end up showing between 2 numbers if
you get it wrong . I use a drill bit to hold the odometer numbers in the
housing when I draw out that shaft then keep moving the bit touching the
shaft until it's out enough to get that aluminum gear out minding the
plastic or nylon drive gear so you don't damage it . You don't need to pull
the shaft with the small brass gear all the way out .If you got this far
allow the aluminum gear to come out and then I use a small ball peen hammer
and tap with another small hammer on each sde of that gear . The idea is to
shrink the hole in that gear on both sides while minding the small prongs on
that gear . The the fun begins as you insert the aluminum gear and lining
it up with the shaft , then once you see it's lined up for sure and mindding
the brass gear to the plastic worm gentley tap until it starts then use a
small vice with a socket and a small C clamp to push the shaft back in but
not so tight that the brass gear is tight against the housing just a bit of
play .
Like I said it's tricky and it might be best just to send it to Jim.
Some people use a small pointed punch to place small dimples around both
sides of the aluminum gear to shrink it's bore , I found that does not work
very well over time because you need to get close to the bores edge a small
ball peen like I described works better and really stays . Also many times
that small black or gray cover behind the needle comes loose so there is
much to be aware of.
