It could certainly be a connection problem. It's common for the 
battery post connections to not get pushed ALL the way down on the 
tapered post because the clamp has gotten squeezed together. Pry the 
clamp open using 2 screwdrivers and then slip it ALL the way down 
before you tighten it.

When the clamps are correctly installed, the post will stick up 
slightly above the top of the clamp.
