Stock cranks are balanced to some degree, perhaps just a static 
balance, but the fancier way to go is to get counterweights added and 
then get the crank dynamically balanced. The main advantage of the 
extra counterweights and balancing is to minimize flexing of the 
crank at high rpms. Flexing leads to beating the #2 main bearing case 
saddles out. I'm not sure if you can actually feel the difference, 
but it's always made me feel better about winding out in the lower 
gears.
