This makes me wonder if what you're seeing is the result of the 
dipstick dragging along the side of the filler pipe and picking up 
ATF on one side of the dipstick. This happen most conspicuously just 
after adding ATF down that pipe. The "real" fluid level is indicated 
by where it covers the full width of the dipstick.

You might want to check this again, at a time when you haven't just 
run ATF down that pipe. Note also that the ATF level is always 
checked with the engine running and the AT in P or N, after running 
the shifter thru each gear position briefly, to make sure all the 
passages are full.
