If you stiil have an old cable you can pull the speedo out and chuck a short 
section of the cable in a drill , first note the direction the cable turns 
the speedo I thinks it's CCW . You can use anything that will fit the speedo 
square drive hole . This way you will know if it's the speedo or cable. Also 
if the cable is not lubed proper and I have no idea if the replacements are 
that can cause the needle to jump and also make noise. My 2 cents for what 
it's worth.
