I think a couple of mine still do a little good in places, but these cars seldom 
get driven in weather where the defroster gets used.

Note that in the later cars, ~'71 and on, where the switch is a simple toggle 
without light, the switch is often a problem. But the switch can be cleaned.

The test is to listen for the relay under the back seat. It should click when 
you toggle the switch. If not, check the wiring and take the switch apart and 
burnish the contacts.
