 I don't think the lower gas milage is due to the charging system since what 
you read at the battery running is what the FI see's .

 the level in the battery might be low and cause it not to charge due to 
sulfated plates. All batteris need to sit to drain off excess surface change 
so 12.4 to 12.6 sitting over night is fine. Batteries can be a year old and 
have issues like a shorted plate or weak cell .

 On my 73 AT in park it reads a bit over 14 volts in drive it sometimes 
drops to 13.5 , sometimes it reads just above 12 in drive at idle then comes 
back to 13.5 yet is always above 14 in park or when driving . Seems like few 
months ago it was never below 13.5 at idle in drive.

 I just base  this on a VDO voltmeter . I need to check it with my DVOM . 
Did a year ago and adjusted the VDO so it read the same as the DVOM yet it 
still was up and down. Even at 12 volts at idle the engine runs the same and 
it's FI.
