I think it would be hard to replate that assembly, just because there are lots 
of tight spots in there that would hold solution and not plate well, and the 
moving parts might not work afterwards. In general, platers also like to 
immerse parts to be plated completely, rather than dip them in and just plate 
part of the item, because the surface of the tank tends to leave a rather large 
crusty edge to the plating. 

You might be able to get away with the crusty edge if there's an inch or so of 
straight section that would be covered by the black plastic.

Your best bet would be to find an OE part that was still in good condition. 
They were used on all Type 3s from '68 to '71 and maybe early '72. Beetles 
may have gotten the same part in the same years.
