I didn't know that was the same size, thanks!

You mean the copper crush gasket? Hmmm, I suppose that would work. Or
you can just use some gasket compound there.

Right. I have the correct gaskets, but they are moderately expensive.
Genuine OG VW, $11 each.

That's an interesting point. 2 gaskets is how it's shown in the Bentley and in
the parts book, but our engines originally came with no gasket there, just the
metal louver plate. (Yes, you must put in correctly!) The "wrinkles" in that
plate seal quite well by themselves, but maybe the gaskets are necessary if
you reuse an old plate and don't use gasket compound.

I've done it both ways and they all work. Using 2 gaskets makes for a lot of
stack height and will lift the 3 bolt holes that the fan housing has to match up
to. That can be a problem, but only a small one.

Next time I do this, I would use just the metal louver plate with gasket
compound and no gaskets.

BTW, the metal louver plate was a factory addition, sometime in the early
60's, to cut down on oil mist that was getting to the breather. This was added
to ALL VWs at that time, not just Type 3s, and was recommended for all
earlier VW engines, 1200 cc and larger, if they were ever rebuilt or
disassembled to that point. (The 36 HP engines have a breather that is
integral with the case, so there's no way to add that plate. I don't know if VW
had a different solution for them.)
