First off, While VW did make and sell 1500 cc engines up to the end of
production, ALL the VW Type 3 FI engines were 1600 cc. For the first 2
years they used Bosch 0 280 150 001 black injectors, but in '70 those were
superceeded by 0 280 150 007 yellow injectors. I don't know what the
difference is, although the internet rumor is that the yellow ones run richer. I
doubt if it's that simple. Except for the color of the plastic and the molded-in
part numbers, there's no other external difference.

No, Bosch made hundreds of different versions, more than I would have
thought necessary. Besides, there were very few Mercedes D-jetronic
engines, all V8s. I've seen and worked on 2, both happened to be '72s, one
a grey market 280 C and the other a 350 SL. Most Mercedes shops would
never see either one.

Probably not. I've never known them to wear out. The only problem they
seem to have is that the internal O-rings can dry out and then they leak. This
seems to happen to some injectors and not to others. If yours haven't been
doing this, they probably never will.
