Try this:

Reconnect the temp sensor.

Unplug the throttle position switch (TPS.)

Try the exercise as above again. Is the RPM swing gone? If so, it may just 
be the normal TPS contact pulsed enrichment. If that's all it is, you can 
ignore it. If you want, I can send you my faq on testing your TPS and making 
sure it's set correctly. Note that nothing you've indicated points to a 
misadjusted TPS, but the '72-3 TPSs have a habit of wearing out, so it's 
worth doing the test.

Muffler cement is more like plaster or Portland cement. It ignores heat. I 
suspect that an exhaust connection can get too hot even for Silicones.
