I don't think that's true. While those seals have little ridges next to the lip, 
which appear to be oriented so as to direct oil back away from the seal when 
rotating, this is not a necessary part of their function. The pointed edge of 
the lip quickly wears to a small flat that his held against the shaft by the 
garter spring outside the rubber. As long as the shaft is smooth, this will still 
seal, at least for low pressure, which is all that's ever present here.

Besides, when the engine is not running, the oil level is below the 
crankshaft, so I really should not have mentioned them.
