[T3] type3-vwtype3.org Digest, Vol 153, Issue 8

The thing is, if the Oil Leaks are from the Flywheel end Crankshaft Seal
that is a Lip Seal. Lip Seals rely upon the rotation of the Shaft to
mechanically make the Seal. So the Leaks happen when the Engine is not
rotating.

Im using the DT50 synth in the Squares 2056, as per the designers spec.
Im
no fan of synth oils but this was specifically designed for
Air cooleds and Im happy with it, but oddly enough, it leaves a nice
puddle
under it by spring time but doesn't leak a drop over the summer months.

I would think that the thicker oil in the winter would be less likely to
leak, yea, it sits, but still. that thin summer oil, especially after
shutdown I would think would leak more easily but it doesn't.

Are the laws of Physics reversed with the Synth oils?

They seem to be in force with oil pressure, the fresh oil always has a
bit
poorer pressure than it does when you get a thousand miles or so on it
And the contaminates thicken it a bit.

Anybody else have their winter leaks fix themselves in the summer?
Keith

I don't think so, at least not in this corner of the multiverse.
From the location of the puddle, can you tell us from where the oil is
leaking? Elastomers
tend to shrink more than metals when cold, so think rubber seals:
pushrod tube seals, oil
filter seal, oil cooler seals, or front and rear crank seals....

I inherited an untested AM/FM car radio.
The intent was to install the radio in my one-owner, '69 Type 3
Squareback
which has an original Sapphire (AM only) radio
There are tags & numbers attached to or stamped on the metal carcass
that
say:
1.) "Designed and built exclusively for Volkswagen ?n the United States
of
America by Motorola Inc."
2.) Another paper tag says: "5VW3916 VOLKSWAGEN"
3.) Another: "15D41284E-01"
4.) Another: "Mod. 5VW3916
SER. 9285 ... 6504"
5.) Another: AM??FM KOSUB"
6.) Another: An unreadable paper tag,
and finally,
7.) "15D41286EO"
A.) I've attempted to research each of those tags or numbers with no
results as to what year, model, or body style they fit.
B.) It appears that the plastic mount that held the "under dash"(?)
radio,
is at a pretty severe angle so the face would be plumb & level.
C.) There are two leads (Red & Gray) that are the + and -- power wires
AND
4 other dual wires (black & black with a white tracer) that I believe to
be
Right & Left Speaker wire for stereo. ???
Those 6 wires are "female", housed in a 6-pin plastic connector.
Since 10 or more Radio Shack stores in our Madison, WI area are
"Permanently Closed", I have been unable to find a supplier that may be
able to sell me the "male", 6-pin connector counterpart.
Each of the 6-pin, female connectors measure .081" or 2.07mm ID.
Do any of our Type 3.org members have any thoughts or suggestions how I
can
resurrect this AM/FM radio?
WHEW!

You might try the guy at this site, as he seems to know early VW
Sapphire
radios pretty well. The radio you have must be much later and does not
seem to be a Sapphire. (Does it say anything on the dial?) Nevertheless,
he
may be able to help you.

<https://5060vwradio.myfreesites.net/sapphire-radios>
In the past, I've also come across other sites that cover a range of VW
"OE"
radios. There's also this thread on thesamba:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/archive/index.php/o-t--t-111350--.html
<https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/archive/index.php/o-t--t-111350--.html>
Beyond that, you could look for Molex connectors to see if they have
anything like what you need, but Molex connectors tend to be
rectangular,
while the message you sent me mentioned a circular (DIN?) connector.
You big problem is going to be what to butcher to install stereo
speakers.
Please don't consider installing in the doors! If you want FM, look for
a
non-stereo AM/FM Sapphire that should be a drop-in installation.

Jim - (to your response)
The 6-pin, plastic connector on the AM/FM radio IS rectangular ... not
round.
I found a company that sells a 12" loop with 6-pin, male/female
connectors
on the end of the wires.
But the ID, female metal connector on my AM/FM radio is appreciably
smaller
than any connectors that I've found online.
But ...
1. removing the existing female connector &
2.) doing a little "surgery" on the existing wires and
3.) installing the female half of the 12" connectors "loop" on the
radio &
the other male half to the 12-volt in the dash,
4.) I should have working AM/FM radio in the Squareback.
To date, there is *nothing* that would convince me to "cobble up" &
mount
the speakers in the original '69 door panels.
You know I'm a dyed-in-the-wool "stocker"! ?
