[T3] Noisy Tranny

The whine wasn’t that bad after they went thru it again, always been that
way, Ok, just not as quite as a virgin tranny but that I was OK with ,
The noise now started as the ballsy rumble sitting there at idle in neutral,
now it’s the screaming or chirping ballsy rumble that most of the time is
just the rumble, loudest accelerating
In 2nd gear but there all the time the clutch is engaged. I don’t hear it
on the highway with all the other noises drowning it out.

If things were mis-aligned, I agree, Id hear a whine, and that has never
changed since I got it, it has about 30K on it now.

$80 bearing? Not able to get a number off the old one and order from a
bearing house? Ive always done that when I needed oddball bearings.

Keith

You're certainly right, that making noise in N with the clutch engaged
eliminates a number of possibilities, including some bearings. But it still
leaves some possibilities, including bearings.

In N, two of your gearsets are slipping on their input shaftbearings, while
the other two are spinning the counterparts on the countershaft. Okay, so
this leaves out the R/P mesh, but not necessarily the pinion bearing seating
(has it come loose in the case, allowing its shaft to move forward a bit.)

I'm thinking of the fact that if either shaft has managed to change position
axially, that leaves a lot of things mis-aligned, including bearings, each
of which could cause whining.

BTW, one of the only trannys I have ever fixed, had a broken pinion bearing.

In order to get that car back on the road I did a tranny swap, but much
later I tried to fix that one. The replacement bearing cost me, after my
discount from VW, over $80, and that was probably over 30 years ago. Those
parts are not cheap! And to install that bearing I had to spend a few days
with a mill and some big chunks of steel making the tools I needed just to
take the pinion shaft apart. I've got those tools now, if you need them.

In the end the repaired tranny was excellent, but that was because I didn't
change anything that would have required reshimming.
