Michael,
Be careful what you wish for. It's WAY too easy to get sucked into something
that seems cool, but is just another way to follow some sort of misguided
popular trend and do nothing more than make your car less roadworthy and
less useful. A '71 Square is a great car and the Type 3 front axle beam is a
better engineered suspension than the Beetle beam.
If you're trying to bring an non-working Square back to life, start by getting it
going and stopping, and fixing all the other things that have gone wrong over
the years. Once you get all those things fixed, then you can think about the
other "improvements" you want to make. If you start with the improvements,
you're likely to run out of money before you get the car back on the road.
Unfortunately, lots of "restorations" get sidetracked that way.
You're likely to have lots more questions as you work your way down this
road, and there's plenty of help available here. Let us know what you need.
