Yes, it's unlikely to be the gear itself. The parts are held in mesh by the 
springs that push 3 little lugs outwards against the inside of a larger ring. 
This is all part of the syncro ring assy. I don't know what wears when this 
happens, but I've heard that something must wear, since this seems to 
happen on high mileage trannys. I'd be concerned about bungie cordiing the 
shift lever, as that would maintain side thrust and wear on the shift fork and 
the slot it rides in.
