There are two very faint stamped in strings.  One ends with "07" and the 
other starts with the VW logo and ends with a "1C".

I'm starting to think that if these kinds of no longer made parts are 
starting to fail, it might be time to consider a Megasquirt, if it is a 
bolt on solution.
