That's an important thing to keep intact. In later years, the vac advance just
helps with gas mileage; in earlier years it's essential for a good power curve.
You didn't say what year or distributor this was, so I don't know which system
you have.

There are small differences in the delivery pressure for Type 3 and beetle
pumps. Most people seem to think that these differences are important, but I've
never been able to understand how that might be possible.

I don't know how you could be missing the bakelite guide sleeve. Without that,
the pump pushrod would fall down into the engine and get lost. Getting it out
might require a complete teardown of the engine. If the bottom end of the guide
tube has broken off it might work for awhile, but you're living dangerously. I
think I have at least one of those parts here if you need one, but they should
be available almost anywhere that works on old VWs. Beetles used the exact same
part.

I'm not sure either. For the early carbed cars I THINK it was 5 mm. The exact
size is not important, as long as it fits snugly. You could take your old pump
with you so you could try different sizes.
