It's not even necessary to remove one end. If you have access to a
lathe, just cut some of the alum off behind one steel end, then press
the end on down into that shortened alum tube. I've done this many
times, but Bill Fisher's book, "How To Hot Rod the VW Engine" gets
the credit for this method.
