I ran the new GL 4/GL 5 oil in my 66 beetle for about 6-8 years with 
no long term adverse effects.  However the synchros did not work very 
well, I thought they were worn. Two years ago I put in GL4 synthetic 
and the improvement was immediate and dramatic. Shifting is much 
smoother as the synchros are now working properly.  It seems GL5 is 
too slippery for the synchros to work.
