*OK , guys. I'll take another run at this Towing my '69 Square, MT, FI
behind our motor home. Reason for need? Towing my car from Wisconsin to
the 2012 Invasion in Colorado Springs, CO. (1033 miles, one-way)*
*
*
*First ... about the Tow Bar, itself. Several people have advised mt NOT
to us a Bumper Mount Tow Bar. I agree. The oval mounting area which is
welded to the "sub-frame" has two bolts (size ?) on each side. Due to the
fact that my car has spent it's entire (almost) 43 years in Wisconsin,
those oval mounts are VERY "rusty" and have no structural integrity. In
fact, I believe one of them has fallen out.*
*
*
*So a Bumper Mount Tow Bar is not possible.*
*
*
*Second ... IF Volkswagen never made a tow bar, I'm assuming (yeah, I know
the danger) that any Tow Bar that may have been "fitted" to our Type 3's,
is an after market or possibly a "home-made" device.*
*
*
*Am I still on solid ground, so far?*
*
*
*From what I've been told, there are two possible types of attaching a tow
bar to our cars. Both of them involve the Front Axle Beam.*

*
*
*1. I've been told that two (2) "tabs" (one on each side; inboard of the
steering linkage/tires) were welded to the bottom of the Axle Beam. A
"Y"-shaped Tow Bar was attached to these "tab's" with two lynch pins and
went forward to a Ball Hitch Coupler. The Coupler attached to the "towing
vehicle", with a 2" receiver with a 1-7/8" or 2" ball.*
*2. The other method is to "clamp" the "Y"-shaped Frame Tow Bar around the
lower part of the Axle Beam with "saddle-like" clamps. No welding required.
*

*

Do any of these methods seem to be the correct way to tow a VW Type 3?*
*Does anyone have a Tow Bar? Pictures?*
