In that case, it could either be a squeak where the throwout bearing 
rubs on the pressure plate, or it could be something related to the 
engine main bearings, something that changes as the crankshaft is 
pushed to the rear as the pressure plate gets depressed.

Watch the pulley with the engine running and get someone to depress 
the clutch while you're watching. Can you see the pulley move to the 
rear? If things are in good shape you should not be able to see any 
movement, other that the rotation.

If it suddenly becomes necessary to depress the clutch much more than 
before, that's a sign that strand(s) have broken and you should 
replace it now. Normal wear of the clutch will slowly move the 
operating point of the clutch up, not down.

No sound from the valve. If the valve burns and leaks, you might hear 
a slightly different exhaust note, from gas whistling out thru the 
burned area. If you did a compression check and found one cylinder 
significantly low, that's a possible bad sign, but that can have 
other causes, too. For most people, valve problems occur without 
warning.
