It's almost always the switches on the master cylinder. After all 
these years they just go bad. If one goes bad the lights will still 
work, but once the second one fails, the lights stop working.

Replacing them is pretty simple and if you work fast, you don't even 
need to bleed the brakes afterwards. Just have the new one in your 
other hand when the old one comes out.

You can save a little money by just replacing one, since having 2 
good ones doesn't seem to last significantly longer than having just 
one.
