Does anyone else have trim rings with grey valve stem grommets that
they believe are original to a car that's a '68 or later?
I believe the trim rings were part of a kit that came shipped along
with the car, but only installed by the dealer during dealer prep.
The kits included things like the outside mirrors, the license plate
brackets & hardware, the trim rings, and (I suspect) the hub caps.
It's possible that the seat belts were also in this kit, but I
suspect those were factory installed. Anybody know?
Basically, the kits contained all the external things that might get
be easily damaged or vandalized in transit.
There's always a chance that the parts the dealer put on your car
were not the actual parts that came in the kit that was shipped
inside it. Parts could have been scrounged to repair another car and
then replaced with replacement parts from the distributor. Almost
anything is possible at that point.
Other accessories, like air conditioning, radios, antennas, luggage
racks, trunk lights, etc. were all US made and dealer installed. So
those items do not appear on the VWAG parts lists and they tend to
vary a lot over the years.
