The stock system uses only a single pre-pump filter. That filter 
alone is more than sufficient. VW recommended replacement of that 
filter every 30k miles, but I never replace them unless there's been 
a problem with the overflow hose, that let a lot of dirt into the gas 
tank.

Have you installed one of my overflow hose kits? That's the one most 
important thing you can do for your system. Everything else, other 
than the stock filter, is just window dressing.
