As far as the B pillar, "hinge" end goes, I don't remember what goes
on there in the fasty, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't need as much
modification as on a square or notch. Just make sure you have all the
parts you need to anchor that end. ISTR that there are a few small
bits in there that can tend to be overlooked or lost, but I've only
been in there, on a fasty, once, and that was a long time ago.
Yeah, it's basically a "tapping plate" for the sheet metal screws to
anchor to. On the 71 and later cars, that plate was eliminated because VW went
with "flow thru ventilation" on those cars (with the blower motor), and felt
the need for the pop outs wasn't needed. On the 71 to 73 cars, the holes
are there, but the plate is missing. You could make your own plate, and have
threaded screws attach the latch to the body, like Phil had done. ;-)
There's no mods to the "B" post, as the window seal (with metal frame)
attaches with 4 nuts (the metal frame has studs to help locate them) to the
window opening, and uses 4 clips per window to hold the glass in the track,
as there's a grooved section of seal for the glass to go into (like the
stationary glass uses). That "grooved section" of seal covers the front third
to half of the glass.
The engineering of the Fastback pop out glass is something to behold. : )
