[T3] FI Dizzy for Carbs

Max,

I don't know enough about the minutia of specific models to say if it would
work or not.

In short, carbureted cars need more time to burn fuel at idle unlike a FI
car that injects a "perfect" blend at TDC.

But researching down the type 3 rabbit hole, 1965 "1500 S" models and
1966-1967 1600 models (manual and automatics) all use the same distributor,
even though they are marked differently. This is because they all have the
same exact replacement called out by VW, the "231-137-033". The 231-137-033
needs a 10 degree BTDC at idle, very similar to the "034". So it would work
much better at burning fuel when used in a carbureted car than a using a
distributor from a fuel injected car.

I would say the "033" may be a very close cousin to the "034", but with
more initial advance. I can't say how close the total combined advance
would compare to the "034" because it isn't listed. I would be cautious
because I also don't know how much Hg the 32mm PDSIT carbs pull and how
much Hg the vacuum can on the "033" needs and how far it advances.

From what I have gathered, the "best all-around" stoichiometric ratio is
reached at idle approximately 7.5 degrees BTDC with most volkswagen dual
port engines with stock cams and most Type 4 engines with stock cams. This
is general number making the "034" fit nearly any carbureted dual port
motor (with some specific carburetor exceptions like a Solex 30/31).

I have swapped in many "034" distributors on Type 4 motors equipped with
32/34 Solex's and the results are nothing short of amazing. Also with dual
Kadrons on Type 1 motors. It just seems VW worked some real voodoo with the
"034" making it a "one size fits all" distributor.
