NO springs are needed to open the flaps. The thermostat itself is 
capable of providing much more than the necessary force. The OE 
spring is there to prevent rattling and in case some part of the 
linkage comes apart. If the adjustment clamp should come loose, the 
spring will pull the flaps open.
