[T3] Muffler oddity....

There were some cost-saving measures on the later cars - painted front
flasher and rear light housings, non-chromed window winders. Very possibly
spares not supplied with the car originally may have been produced to a less
stringent standard. I'll have a check of my spare mufflers and see if any
have the VW stamp but no transverse pipes.

Apparently not all VW mufflers got the equal length pipes. Last year I
replaced a rusted out muffler that was on a factory-rebuilt motor. If it
wasn't genuine then it was a very detailed fake. Just for grins I cut it all
the way open, and it was just an empty can except for two baffle plates. It
was clear that there were never any internal pipes. This muffler came from
a '72 Square so it looks like they might have dropped the pipes in the late
models. The pipes were present in the first muffler that was in my
daughter's '69 Square though.

All Type 3 tailpipes (as well as the other air-cooled Types) have fibreglass
sound dampening material packed between the perforated inner tube and outer
tube. It makes a big difference to the noise level. The main muffler
doesn't have that filling, but ISTR the genuine VW ones have pipes across
the inside of the main casing to produce a balanced 4-into-1 system. The
lengths of the upper pipes then match the extra distance through the heat
exchangers.

The aftermarket mufflers don't usually have those, which explains some of
the extra weight of the genuine VW ones. The heavier grade of steel helps
extend the longevity of the genuine ones.

The loss of interior insulation is bound to result in hotter exhaust boxes,
but on most cars there are heat shields over the system where the body is
close. The Type 3 muffler has an insulated heat protecting panel above to
prevent the rubber air-intake bellows getting melted - something to consider
with aftermarket systems.
