[T3] Front axle beam question

They're not in the drawings for local manufacture that I have, but are
illustrated in the special service tools catalogue. The one for the lower
arm does have a step that looks about 5mm on the inner side of the large
flange, so that's the right sort of depth for the needle bearing.
The upper arm drift doesn't seem to have any step, but has a series of
stepped down flanges outside the main flange - maybe depth guides?

I'll photo them and send you them.

Thanks for mentioning the local manufacture catalogue - I'd not looked at it
for some years, and see it has a lot of stuff I'd not remembered. There's a
lever arrangement for easing up the Beetle scuttle to allow good alignment
of the bonnet (hood)! It is a 1955 publication updated to 1960 though, so
doesn't apply to Type 3 specific tools. I wonder if there are any further
updates.

Yes, this looks like the same drawing, but without any installation
tolerances in the dimensions.

The Bentley gives a dimension of 4.5-5.5 mm, which would permit some amount
of impossible overlap. 5 mm might be okay, but the seal I measured seems to
be 5+ mm wide. OTOH, the dimension given for the upper needle bearing allows
for a minimum of 1 mm of clearance, which gives some tolerance for assembly
variation and seems perfectly reasonable.

There are VW special tools for installing these parts. Does your collection
of tool drawings include VW273C (Type 3 lower) and VW273D (Type 3 upper)? If
so, those would contain the correct dimensions.
