It's been ages since I have posted here.

For #1:
Drop spindles have been made by two people:

Bert in UK made 2 runs of 50 from billet, but they are all sold now.  
They sold for about $700/pair.
Russell at OldSpeed can weld custom drop spindles using original cores.  
A bit less than Bert's.

Some people stuff in a Type 1 beam and use Type 1 drop spindles, but 
most of us turn our noses as it's a big sacrifice in ride quality.
