Dave's last point is especially important. '72 was the only FI year 
to get the dual vacuum adv/retard distributor, and ONLY the Bentley 
manual gives the correct tuneup instructions for that year. It's very 
common for the vac retard to be broken, so nothing works right until 
this is fixed. Unfortunately, it's expensive to replace.  

When you read the Bentley, note that the very first thing they tell 
you to do is check the vac retard to verify that it's working.

And, yes, if your dist is running into the generator, you need to 
pull the dist drive shaft and back it off one tooth. Don't do this 
until you verify that the vac retard is working, however, because you 
may just end up undoing this.
