That sounds pretty brutal, but it's probably true that if your case 
survives this treatment it's still good. The problem might be that 
this would damage some perfectly good cases.

Yes, the hotter the engine gets, the more tension is on the studs. 
Enough tension and the threads strip. Stripped head stud threads are 
enough of a show-stopper that I have RIMCO put case savers in any 
engine I rebuild. It's cheap insurance.
