looks like you made the right call in pulling it apart!

its unforgivable to miss the dowel pins and just leave it!  it does take
care to get them aligned but you sure will know on assembly if they are
wrong,   NEVER force anything on assy and you'd think shops would know that!

when you get new bearings, be sure to source them from a quality source
and fit them all to the case torqued before you assemble, pay careful
attention to #2 that the case closes around it properly

Nothing catastrophic, but it sure should have been. I'm surprised it lasted
as long as it did.
