thats the question, will it suddenly go boom?
when I ground out the bearings on the last motor with the synthetic oil
they rumbled but good for nearly 10K more miles before that motor
gave up, and it wasnt the bearings that did... cracked piston burned thru.

its not that loud yet on startup, but then again.. 25W50 in the cold now.
It owes me nothing thats for sure, but id like not to have it quit too far
from home.

Keith

I think Keith must be doing an experiment on the longevity of a
well-maintained Type 3 engine. It's brave to continue well past the normal
service life to find out when it will expire, perhaps catastrophically.
Better to rebuild before that happens.

I know my engine is coming up to a rebuild as it rumbles for a few seconds
until the oil pressure comes up. It does deter its use to take the club
display stuff to a VW event, so I've been using the Golf 3 TDI Variant
instead, but it's only delaying the rebuild.

You've got more than 6 months, and you must have spare engine parts
stashed around there. Why not build yourself a nice new TYPE 3 engine?
You could do this easily in the time available, and that would save you a
lot
of stress on that drive.
