The '72-3 crankcase ventilation system works very well; there's no reason to 
consider changing it. The PCV valve is quite durable and should last forever. 
I've never seen a broken one. The only weak link in that system is the red 
vent hose between the heads and the air cleaner.

I'd love to find red replacement hose for those. Anyone got a source, Soren?

All the vent systems from the '68-on were closed systems for the sake of 
reducing pollution. The late system does a better job of scavenging water 
vapor out of the crankcase. That's it's advantage over the earlier systems.
The fresh air that the late system introduces into the crankcase dilutes the 
vapors there and makes them less likely to condense out before they reach 
the combustion chamber.
