[T3] automatic AAR

There has been some discussion on the Samba about why VW/Bosch went to en electrically heated AAR for the automatics. Although it may theoretically be more ideal for some reason (idle consistency when hot, emissions, who knows?) the questions was never really settled.
So I am wondering if the troubles for a non-stock engine with an automatic might be better served by just putting in the manual crankcase temperature based unit. They are for sale new and used on the Samba. They are far easier to check and adjust that the sealed automatic units, and who is to say the optimization VW/Bosch did even applies to the larger engine now?
