I generally inspect the drive dogs to make sure there are no burrs that might 
cut into something else. Other than that, there's nothing to worry about.

I'm surprised, I thought VW started making those cans non-interchangeable. 
I get a lot of distributors with modified cans so they can use Beetle cans on 
Type 3 distributors.

That's a later replacement point's plate. Bosch redesigned it a couple times.

That's typical: steel/phenolic/steel. I try to check to see that that the cam 
ends up in the center of the window where the FI trigger points install.

Shims vary here. There's  always at least 1 steel shim and one phenolic 
shim, but the shims can vary in thickness, and often it's steel/phenolic/steel.

No E-rings on any of the FI distributors.

Those often crack and disappear. I replace them with nylon or paper 
washers.

Don't know why you sent me 24 mBytes of photos of distributor. I've seen 
them before.
