With all respect to the prior CDI comments and commenters, my experience with installing one on my '75 Westy was a little different. I already have a Mallory Unilite distributor so I opted to stay with the brand and use their Mallory 6A CDI system.
My first surprise was when doing the recommended bench testing of the unit - after setting it all up for a test, I was really surprised by the "spark" at the plug...instead of just a narrow spark of any color, the CDI unit produced more of a plasma cloud...definitely not just a narrow spark. Not sure that all by itself has an effect on performance, but it was impressive to see.
The unit makes no sound, just illuninates a red LED on the CDI bow with each ignition, which when running looks more like a consistently lit LED.
I actually made new plug wires, too, with their wire kit and those have been great as well.
Performance is great especially at highway speeds, though I know there are other factors involved (e.g. exhaust) and likely the super competent full-engine mechanics on this list like Jim, Keith, and others could get the same results from a totally stock powerplant.
Have great weekends, all!- DougFalls Church, VA
