I had wondered about that possibility. Most silicone caulks release 
acetic acid as they cure, but I understand that you can get a version 
that release some kind of alcohol instead. That version is more 
expensive and is sold where you don't want an adverse reaction to 
metals.  

I'd also wondered if you could overspray the backside of the mirror 
with some kind of paint that might seal the reflecting coating. Did 
you try anything like that?
