[T3] Tired Searching for Tires

Sometimes rubbing on Type 3s is because the steering knuckle assembly has
worn where it rubs on the torsion arm. There is a part (no. 8 on parts
picture at http://home.clara.net/hallvw/type3/T3pbo/T3pb4-6.htm ) which I
think has been repro-ed that clamps round the torsion arm and acts as a
steering stop. Stock tyres can rub due to this wear, particularly when
manoeuvring in reverse. I made a strip of metal into a steering stop clamp
when a fussy tester was concerned at the lightest of rubbing in reverse.
The rubber moulding sprues on the tyre walls were not even rubbed off by the
contact, just a bit of tarry underseal.

Max, thank you for the picture. The wider tires give it an interesting
stance.

Surprised there is no rubbing in the front, as on a tight turn I have had
the 165s rub.

What rim width are you running?

I have heard not to use tires older than 10 years, but the trouble is that
with our size, the tire sites for close to that time. So, what is the
difference of them storing them and me storing them? The Kelly tires from
the parts Squareback were just purchased a week or two before the accident.
Tried selling the rim and tire as a package, but per usual, no bites. So,
now just store what I have for now.

Thank you,
Adriel

have a nice supple feel to them that I like a lot. They are a little shorter
than 165s, so my odo and speedo both read a little high.

all the way around. With those I do feel that the extra unsprung weight
compromises the ride a bit. At least I can feel the difference. They aren't
worth a damn in the snow. But they do clear the fenders.
