[T3] Speedometer/Odometer ratio?

Does the drive wire feeding the speedo rotate a magnetic assembly that
pushes/induces movement of the needle? Perhaps the numbers are a ratio of
some baseline Gauss, or dwell of the armature that will exert a different
level of force on the needle to read a given speed at a given RPM.

I'm making the assumption that the Mercedes transmission feed is before the
gear ratio change at the differential.

Could also be a direct gram "weight" measurement of the reluctance of the
(spring loaded?) needle itself to compensate for different drive speeds,
which sounds like a far cheaper way to go about it to me.
