[T3] Microfiche

I know Russ would not put the files online, which I assumed was for
copyright reasons rather than server space. Many of my factory manuals have
"Property of Volkswagen Motors" stamped from place to place. I think it
unlikely that Volkswagen minds what is done with them. I know the KG Owners
Club had written permission from them to copy and distribute the printed
manuals to their members. I think if it was being done on a commercial
basis, VW could make a fuss, though I doubt they would bother -
international legal wrangles are pretty difficult. The USA VW lawyers who
wanted the UK club to stop using the VW logo stopped hassling us after a
while - probably when they realised that .co.uk meant they would have
difficulties!

In the UK, Copyright exists for 70 years after the death of the last author,
or after publication if it is not identifiably the work of individuals. The
USA may have different laws, and Germany too, no doubt. I assume it would
be covered by German law in this case.

I guess the Bentley CDs/DVDs are pirated, since the books themselves are
still available, unless they have now produced a CD/DVD version. I assume
the loss of revenue to the publishers are small enough for it not to be
worth legal action.

I have Acrobat Pro and all the PDF's that were given to me on CD from Bob.
They are broken up per section. It would have to be reassembled (easy),
then bookmarked.

I have a couple of concerns with distributing the PDF's through my site
though.

First, I don't know the legal ramifications of giving away the entire books
in PDF format, so I wasn't comfortable putting them up in that format. Are
these manuals considered public domain now? Are they still copyrighted by
Volkswagen AG? What about the Bentley copies reproduction for sale
currently?

Second, bandwidth isn't cheap and the files are large. The Parts List is
about 800megs and the Service Manual is almost a gig and it's missing a book
I'll have it soon). I could compress them a little bit to compromise
quality to save space, but the files are still going to be very large. If I
put these up on the wiki I am going to have to pay for the bandwidth that it
costs for people to download them for free.

If there are enough requests for this and somebody wants to provide the
hosting to host these files, I can link to them.
