A somewhat related anecdote: Back in 1997 I was working at what was then my dad's VW dealership. I handled the new car ordering from the factory. The computer system allowed us to see what stage in production a car was at. Those stages were numbered sequentially. There was one stage number that basically signalled "pulled off the line and pushed to the side". Unfortunately the system would not provide any information why or how long the delay would be, and calling the factory didn't really help, either. The car would appear at the next production stage at some point, or in the worst case you'd find it again at the start of production. I'm guessing they probably found it easier or cheaper to just replace the whole car sometimes.
